Statement on the 2024 Election: Momentous and Ominous Results

November 11, 2024 – White Plains, NY from the Westchester Women’s Agenda Board

The results of the 2024 US Election are both momentous and ominous, with grave implications for the future of women.

Regarding New York results, WWA is proud to have participated in the coalition that passed Proposal 1, the New York Equal Rights Amendment. We celebrate the many dedicated WWA members and allies who worked so hard on this campaign, building a team, educating the public, and getting out the vote.

In the end, voters overwhelmingly confirmed that everyone in our State should be treated equally under the law. The NY State Constitution now prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, creed, ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, pregnancy and pregnancy outcomes, reproductive healthcare and body autonomy. It enshrines in law the strongest, most comprehensive protections for abortion and LGBTQ+ rights among all 50 states.

The national election results tell a different story and foretell an ominous future. In 2025 a new federal administration will take power. They have shown contempt for women and families by the flood of sexist, racist, and xenophobic speech they used across all media. Their Project 2025 policy blueprint describes a country where women’s and LGBTQ+ rights are obliterated, public institutions come under assault, immigrant families are terrorized and torn apart, and personal and political freedoms are destroyed. This nightmare must not become a reality.

WWA is deeply concerned about the challenges ahead, but we remain dedicated to our mission – to improve the lives of women in Westchester County by advancing racial, economic, and social equity and justice for all.

This past year has shown the amazing accomplishments that can be made when we work together towards a common goal.
