About Us

Who We Are and What We Do

The WWA is a feminist, anti-racist, nonpartisan coalition that advocates on behalf of women in Westchester. We work to ensure that the County's social and economic climate provides women with access, rights, opportunities, and advancement regardless of race, color, ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, creed, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.

Our focus is on driving change in critical categories  which encompass the community's most significant areas of need. The strong, continuous advocacy efforts of our nonprofit and individual members has resulted in new policies, important legislative advances, and increased funding from County and State governments, enabling our under-served and marginalized neighbors to get the services they need.

Over the years WWA has adapted its advocacy efforts to meet the changing lives of Westchester women as new issues emerged, such as digital inequity, climate injustice, new public health threats, and more. Together we advocate for change to ensure Westchester is an equitable, just, and safe community.

Our History

The Westchester Women’s Agenda began in the 1990s when a small group of women leaders met at the YWCA in White Plains to discuss the impact of budget cuts planned by Westchester County Executive Andrew O’Rourke’s Administration. Services for women and children were severely reduced.

Camille Murphy, who led the County’s Office for Women, suggested the meeting of nonprofit leaders and advocates for women's rights.

Inspired by the New York City Women’s Agenda, the group formed a public-private coalition to advocate on behalf of women and children, with the intention of working initially to influence the County budget and policies, eventually moving beyond that focus to take on New York State issues as well.
